About the Event

Ferragosto: A Celebration of Summer, Harvest, and Rest (traditionally celebrated on August 15)

Dating back to ancient Rome, Ferragosto takes its name from the Feriae Augusti (“Festivals of Augustus”), introduced by Emperor Augustus in 18 BCE. The holiday was added to a series of August festivals, including the Vinalia rustica and Consualia, which celebrated the harvest and the end of a long period of intense agricultural labor. The Feriae Augusti brought these celebrations together into an extended period of rest and festivities following the hard work of the harvest.


Over the centuries, Ferragosto evolved into a beloved Italian summer tradition. Families and friends gathered to enjoy the fruits of their labor, celebrate together, and take a well-earned break. The holiday also coincides with Assumption Day, the Catholic feast celebrating Mary’s ascent into heaven.
